Seminars, training days, staff parties

A corporate venue with no lobby to pay for

Forty-five minutes from south Winnipeg, ten from Steinbach. A whole weekday in the whole building is $500, the parking is free, and nobody is selling you the coffee by the cup.

A meeting room in Winnipeg bills by the hour and marks up the coffee. Here a weekday is $500 — the whole building, 7 AM – 12 AM, with the parking and the kitchen in it.

It is one room, not a conference centre, and that is the trade. If your agenda needs three breakout rooms running at once, book a hotel. If it needs one room that holds your entire company, a ceiling projector and a wireless mic, a kitchen any caterer can walk into, and a car park nobody has to pay for, this is cheaper than anything with a reception desk. The rest of the honesty: nobody sleeps here, so a two-day programme means rooms in Steinbach; we do not set rooms or lay tables, so the classroom or the U-shape is yours to build out of the tables and chairs already in the building; and you are asking people to drive out, which in exchange gets them out of the building they work in.

How the day runs

What actually happens, in order

  1. From 7 AM

The building is yours from seven, which is early enough that nobody is setting up while the first delegates take their coats off. The tables and chairs are in the room and you put them where the day needs them. The projector and screen are ceiling-mounted and the mic is wireless, so the AV is the part you do not have to touch.

  2. Mid-morning

Coffee and tea at $2.75 a head, urns topped up from the first delegate to the last, with a thermos left on each table. It is the line every seminar adds and the only one nobody argues about afterwards.

  3. Lunch

Your caterer, or platters from Steinbach. The kitchen is handed over whole — two fridges, the stove, the microwave, and a commercial dishwasher that does a wash and rinse in two minutes, which is what actually decides whether the afternoon starts on time. There is no minimum spend for us to enforce, because we do not sell food.

  4. Midnight

The rental runs to midnight on any day, so a training session that turns into a supper and a speech does not need a second booking. Past that, the late-night extension is $200 and holds the building to 1 AM. The room is left as you found it unless you added cleaning for $250.

What it costs

What a day here costs

One rate buys the whole building, 7 AM – 12 AM — no half day, no hourly block, no overtime line. Everything under it is a thing we own: the projector, screen, wireless mic and house sound at $125 flat, a stage, the rolling bar, the coffee, and the cleanup. Nothing is bundled, nothing is compulsory, and there is nothing else to find later.

  • Weekday, Monday to Thursday

The whole building, 7 AM to midnight, for five hundred dollars. Seminars, fowl suppers, showers, funeral lunches, reunions and AGMs all book this one.

    $500

  • Friday or Sunday

The same hall and the same hours as a Saturday, two hundred and fifty dollars less. Sunday afternoons get the west light off the field.

    $1,000

  • Saturday

7 AM to midnight on the busiest day of the week. Room for 200, with 180 sitting down comfortably for a plated supper.

    $1,250

  • Projector, Screen & PA System

Ceiling projector, drop-down screen, a wireless handheld mic, and house sound over 3.5 mm or Bluetooth. The line every seminar, AGM and slideshow-at-a-memorial adds.

    $125

  • Stage

A raised platform for the band, the DJ, the head table or the speeches — worth it the moment you have 180 people sitting down and somebody at the back who needs to see.

    $80/ day

  • Bar

The rolling bar, wheeled out to wherever you want it and backed onto the kitchen pass-through so whoever is pouring is not cut off from the room. You bring the drinks and the permit.

    $80/ day

  • Late-Night Extension to 1 AM

The rental runs to midnight; this holds the building to 1 AM. It costs nothing on the Saturday of a whole-weekend booking — that one is already included.

    $200

  • Coffee & Tea Service

Urn coffee, tea, cream and sugar topped up from your first guest to your last, with a thermos left on each table. Around here the coffee runs out before the food does.

    $2.75/ guest

  • After-Event Cleaning

Floors, kitchen, washrooms and bins the morning after. Without it the hall has to be left as you found it — which on a wedding night means somebody's uncle mopping at two in the morning.

    $250

One rate buys the whole building from 7 AM to midnight. Anything below it is something you add on top. Every rate we charge is on the pricing page.

A worked example

A training day for 60, on a Tuesday

Sixty people, the room theirs from seven in the morning, lunch brought in on platters, and the coffee and the cleanup handled at this end.

Weekday hall rental, Monday to Thursday$500
Projector, screen & PA system$125
Coffee & tea, 60 × $2.75$165
After-Event Cleaning$250
Subtotal$1,040
GST 5%$52
Total$1,092

Those four lines are $1,040 before tax and $1,092 after, which across 60 people is $18.20 a head — the room from seven in the morning to midnight, the AV, the coffee all day, the kitchen and the cleanup after. You set the tables the way your day needs, because we do not. Lunch itself is your caterer's invoice, not ours; we do not sell food and have nothing to add a margin to. The $500 damage deposit holds the date and comes back.

Before you ring

Questions

Is the Wi-Fi good enough to run my day on?

Ask before you plan the day on it. The connection out here is farm-country rather than a convention centre's, and we would rather tell you that now than at nine on the morning. Slides off a laptop are fine. If your agenda hangs on a live video call with head office, bring a hotspot and test it when you come out to look at the room, which you should do anyway.

Can we run breakout sessions?

Two groups in opposite corners of the room, yes — it is one open rectangle with no pillars and it is a big one. Three simultaneous breakouts, no, because there is nothing here to shut a door on. If your programme genuinely needs three rooms at once you want a hotel, and we would rather say that than take the booking and have you discover it at ten past nine.

Will the room be set up when we arrive?

No. We do not set rooms, strike them, or lay tables, and we have nothing to rent you for the look of one. What you get is an empty room from 7 AM with the tables and chairs for 200 already in it, and you arrange it the way your day needs — classroom, theatre, U-shape. Sixty people in rows is twenty minutes and two people, and because there is no hourly rate the time it takes costs you nothing. It is worth knowing before somebody on your team finds out at eight.

What does lunch look like when there is no kitchen staff?

You bring it. There is no in-house catering, so the kitchen is handed over to whoever you have hired — two fridges, a stove, a microwave, a coffee maker, and a commercial dishwasher that runs a wash and rinse in two minutes — and there is no minimum spend for us to enforce. Platters from town work fine. Plates and cutlery for 200 are already in the building at no charge; what we do not do is lay them out, so either your caterer does it or somebody on your team does before the room fills.

What does a staff Christmas party actually come to?

For 80 people on a Friday: $1,000 for the building from seven in the morning to midnight, $80 for the bar, $80 for the stage, $200 to hold the room to 1 AM, $220 of coffee and tea, and $250 for the cleanup. That is $1,830, or $1,921.50 with GST — about $24 a head before anybody has catered the food. A Saturday is the same evening for $250 more. What is not in it is the decorating: that is yours to bring, and there is nothing here to hire for it.

Can people stay over, or is everyone driving home?

Everyone is driving home — there is nowhere to sleep on this property and we are not going to pretend otherwise. It is forty-five minutes back to south Winnipeg and ten to Steinbach, on good road. If there is alcohol at your event, the parking is free and overnight is included, so anybody who should not drive can leave the car in the lit north lot and collect it the next day. We would much rather that than the alternative, and it costs nobody anything.

Do you bill by the hour?

No, and there is no overtime line either. You buy the building for the day: $500 Monday to Thursday, $1,000 on a Friday or a Sunday, $1,250 on a Saturday, 7 AM – 12 AM every one of them. There is no half day. A Tuesday with the projector, screen and mic on it is $625, or $656.25 with GST, and that is the room all day, the AV and the parking. If a training day turns into a supper and a speech, the late-night extension is $200 and holds the building to 1 AM.

Price a training day before you ring anybody.

Date, headcount, and whether you want the projector and the coffee on it. The quote comes back itemised with the GST on it, which is the version your finance department wanted anyway.
